Anxiety and dental phobia, psychological factors affecting children's oral health [Ansiedad y odontofobia, factores psicológicos incidentes en la salud oral de los niños]

Objective: to analyse the psychological factors associated with anxiety and odontophobia in children. Method: systematic review of 30 scientific articles in the population. Results and Conclusion: Dental anxiety and odontophobia in children are multifactorial conditions that significantly impact their oral health and quality of life, being influenced by psychological, social and, in some cases, genetic factors. These conditions not only increase the risk of caries and periodontal disease due to avoidance of treatment but also affect the emotional and social well-being of paediatric patients. Evidence-based management strategies such as audiovisual distraction, cognitive-behavioural therapy and sensory adaptation of the environment have been shown to be effective, especially when combined with parental education.
