Abstract

Objective: To analyse the prevalence of psychological, physical and sexual violence against women in Ecuador. Method: Systematic review in Medline, Cochrane, Medigraphic, BVS and PubMed during January 2020-January 2025. DeCS terms were used: violence, gender, sexual abuse, Ecuador and domestic violence. Fifty articles that met the inclusion criteria were included. Results: 64.9% of Ecuadorian women experienced some type of violence during their lifetime, exceeding the regional average (36.1%). Psychological violence affected 56.9%, physical violence 35.4%, and sexual violence 32.7%. The Sierra region had the highest prevalence (45.6%), followed by the Amazon region (40.2%). Risk factors include low educational level, alcohol consumption by partners, and male romantic jealousy. The COVID-19 pandemic increased domestic violence by 56%, predominantly verbal (95%). Mortality from femicide increased in Sucumbíos and Tungurahua. Conclusions: Gender-based violence is an alarming public health problem in Ecuador, requiring targeted interventions that take socio-geographical inequalities into account.
