Abstract

Euthanasia, understood as medical intervention aimed at hastening the death of patients with terminal or catastrophic illnesses, has given rise to a profound legal and ethical debate. The aim of this paper is to analyse euthanasia for people with catastrophic illnesses and how to guarantee a dignified death. The collection of information was carried out by consulting 14 academic articles in specialised databases such as PubMed, Scopus and Google Scholar. Euthanasia for people with catastrophic illnesses poses a legal and ethical challenge that demands a balance between patient autonomy and the protection of fundamental rights. While it is imperative to recognise the right to a dignified death as part of individual self-determination, legislations must adopt a robust approach that provides for both palliative care and procedural safeguards to prevent abuse.
