This research comparatively analyses intimate and non-intimate femicide typified in articles 141 and 142 of the Ecuadorian COIP. Using a qualitative documentary-descriptive approach, the conceptual, contextual and legal differences between the two modalities were examined. The results show that, although they share the same criminal sanction, they differ significantly in terms of the victim-aggressor relationship, motivation and social context. Intimate femicide predominantly occurs in the private sphere with known aggressors, while non-intimate femicide takes place in public spaces without any previous link. Despite legislative advances, challenges persist in the effective application of the regulations, including gender stereotypes among justice officials and deficiencies in the registration systems. It is concluded that the eradication of femicide requires a comprehensive approach that transcends the punitive approach and confronts the structural causes of gender violence.
