Analysis of the causes of femicides in Ecuador [Análisis de las causas de los femicidios en Ecuador]

Femicide, defined as the gender-based murder of women, is the most extreme form of violence against women and reflects the deep structural inequalities that persist in contemporary societies. The objective is to analyze the causes of femicides in Ecuador. The 128 cases of intimate, family and/or sexual femicides reflect the persistence of patriarchal patterns and the normalization of violence in the private sphere. The data presented show that femicide in Ecuador during 2023 is a complex and multidimensional phenomenon, influenced by deeply rooted structural, cultural and social factors. The 321 registered cases reflect the persistence of patriarchal patterns, the normalization of violence in the private sphere, the instrumentalization of women in organized crime contexts and the social exclusion of vulnerable groups.
