Abstract

Objective: To determine the relationship between body posture and dental malocclusions during individual growth and development. Method: A systematic review was conducted through computerized database searches (Sciencedirect, PubMed, Scielo, Elsevier, Proquest, Scopus, DOAJ, Springer and Google Scholar) from 2017-2021. Twenty-one scientific articles that met the established inclusion and exclusion criteria were included. Results: Of the total articles analyzed, 9 (42.86%) corroborated the existence of a relationship between occlusion and body postures, while 12 (57.14%) argued the absence of direct connection. 71.43% of studies considered temporomandibular disorders as an influencing variable. Only 9.52% included respiratory function in their analyses. Conclusions: There is no significant difference between body posture and malocclusions as independent factors. Malocclusions present multifactorial origin, requiring consideration of anatomical-functional structures of the stomatognathic system, including temporomandibular joint, musculature and respiratory function.
