Objective: To analyze scientific evidence on the importance of vitamin D as adjunctive treatment in periodontal disease. Method: Systematic review with meta-analysis of 58 scientific articles published in indexed databases during the last five years. Specific inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied, finally selecting 14 studies for statistical analysis. Results: 15,967 participants were analyzed with an average age of 39 years (60% women, 40% men). 41% presented vitamin D deficiency (≤12 ng/ml), 31% inadequate levels (12-19 ng/ml), 14% adequate (20-30 ng/ml) and 14% optimal (>30 ng/ml). Pearson correlation demonstrated moderate positive relationship (r=0.546, p=0.03) between serum vitamin D levels and improvement in periodontal therapy. Conclusions: Adequate serum vitamin D levels significantly affect periodontal treatment, favoring calcium and phosphorus absorption.
