Diagnostic and treatment criteria for croup in the emergency department [Criterios de diagnóstico y tratamiento de crup en el área de emergencia]

Objective: To determine the diagnostic and treatment criteria for croup in the emergency department of Hospital General Alfredo Noboa Montenegro. Method: Observational, cross-sectional, qualitative-quantitative, descriptive and analytical study through application of a 20 multiple-choice question questionnaire to 30 medical residents. Knowledge about diagnosis, treatment and implementation of management protocols was evaluated. Results: 43.33% of respondents obtained poor knowledge level, 23.33% good level and 33.33% very good level. Regarding diagnosis, 53.33% showed poor knowledge, while in treatment 56.66% demonstrated very good knowledge. 86.66% consider necessary the implementation of a management protocol. Conclusions: Important deficiencies were identified in diagnostic knowledge of croup, contrasting with better understanding of treatment. Most staff consider fundamental to implement standardized management protocols.
