Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the antifungal effect of Xanthium spinosum hydroalcoholic extract at concentrations of 25%, 50%, and 75% against Candida albicans through in vitro study. Method: Experimental research conducted in a specialized laboratory using Candida albicans ATCC 10231 fungal strain. Filter paper discs impregnated with Xanthium spinosum hydroalcoholic extract were prepared in three concentrations. Nystatin was used as positive control and water as negative control. Incubation was performed at 37°C for 48 hours, then inhibition halos were measured according to Duraffourd scale. Results: The evaluated concentrations of 25%, 50%, and 75% of Xanthium spinosum hydroalcoholic extract showed no inhibition halo formation against Candida albicans, evidencing absence of antifungal activity. Conclusions: Xanthium spinosum hydroalcoholic extract does not present antifungal effect against Candida albicans ATCC 10231 strain at the studied concentrations.
