Application of ultrasonic system in root canal disinfection: narrative review [Aplicación del sistema ultrasónico en la desinfección de conductos radiculares: revisión narrativa]

Objective: To determine the efficacy of ultrasonic system to optimize root canal disinfection during endodontic treatment. Method: A narrative review was conducted through documentary analysis of 23 scientific articles obtained from Google Scholar, using specific inclusion criteria for research on ultrasonic irrigation in endodontics. Results: Ultrasonic activation demonstrated superiority over conventional manual irrigation, increasing the antimicrobial capacity of irrigating solutions, especially sodium hypochlorite. The system allows effective access to the apical third, eliminates vapor lock and completely removes the dentinal smear layer. Conclusions: Passive ultrasonic irrigation constitutes a superior technique for root canal disinfection, ensuring complete cleaning and significantly improving the prognosis of endodontic treatment.
