Epidemiological profile of type 2 diabetes mellitus in internal medicine [Perfil epidemiológico de diabetes mellitus tipo 2 en medicina interna]

Objective: To identify the epidemiological profile of type 2 diabetes mellitus in the Internal Medicine Service of the IESS General Hospital Ambato. Method: Observational, cross-sectional, descriptive and retrospective study of 288 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus treated between January and July 2022. Epidemiological variables were analyzed using the AS400 database and SPSS version 21 was used for statistical analysis. Results: 35% of patients were in the 60-69 years age group, followed by 29.5% between 70-79 years. The female sex represented 52% of cases. 81.2% remained hospitalized between 1-10 days. 85.4% presented only type 2 diabetes mellitus diagnosis, while 14.6% had associated diagnoses. Conclusions: The epidemiological profile shows predominance in older adults with slight female predominance, suggesting the need for specific health policies for multidisciplinary management of this pathology.
