Links between personality and therapeutic behaviour based on adherence to medical treatment [Vínculos entre la personalidad y la conducta terapéutica desde de la adherencia al tratamiento médico]

Objective: To analyse the links between personality and therapeutic behaviour in terms of adherence to medical treatment. Method: Bibliographic review in PubMed, Scielo, Medline and Google Scholar of publications from 2019 to 2025 on personality and therapeutic adherence in chronic diseases and psychiatric disorders. Results: Impulsivity and negative affectivity reduce adherence in borderline personality disorder. Neuroticism decreases adherence in type 2 diabetes, while perceived personal control improves it. In adolescents with ADHD, antagonism is associated with lower intentional adherence, and hedonic capacity with better compliance. Dialectic Behaviour Therapy significantly improves adherence in TPL. Conclusion: Personality traits significantly influence therapeutic adherence, making it necessary to tailor strategies to the patient's psychological profile in order to optimise clinical outcomes.
