Efficacy of dental extractions in the treatment of adult skeletal class III camouflage. Systematic review [Eficacia de extracciones dentales en el tratamiento del camuflaje en clase III esqueletal. Revisión sistemática]

Objective: To analyze the available scientific evidence on orthodontic camouflage treatment in adult patients with skeletal Class III malocclusion, evaluating its effectiveness, indications, limitations, and clinical outcomes. Materials and Methods: A systematic literature review was conducted using publications from 2011 to 2025 across specialized databases. Following PRISMA criteria, 11 relevant studies were selected. Results: The selected studies focused on patients in late adolescence or early adulthood with completed craniofacial growth. The most common therapeutic approach was extraction of the lower first premolars (80%), followed by bimaxillary extractions (15%) and asymmetric extractions (5%). Extraction patterns were determined by clinical criteria such as dentoalveolar discrepancy, incisor inclination, and facial profile. Approximately 85% of the studies reported evident facial profile improvements and long-term functional stability. Conclusion: Camouflage treatment involving dental extractions is an effective alternative to orthognathic surgery in properly selected cases.
