Abstract

Objective: to analyse ovarian cancer related to molar pregnancy. Method: Systematic review. Results and conclusion: The evidence analysed in this systematic review establishes a significant association between molar pregnancy and the subsequent development of ovarian cancer, with a relative risk of 1.32 according to cohort studies. The most relevant pathogenic mechanisms include shared genetic alterations in tumour suppressor genes, proliferative effects of prolonged exposure to hCG on ovarian tissue, immunological dysregulation and the carcinogenic potential of chemotherapeutic agents used in the treatment of GTN.
