The Orem self-care theory in patient independence. Systematic review [La teoría de autocuidado Orem en la independencia del paciente. Revisión sistemática]

Objective: to analyse Orem's self-care theory in patient independence. Method: Systematic review of 15 scientific articles. Results and conclusion: The results reveal that this theory constitutes a robust and versatile conceptual framework for the design of nursing interventions, the applicability of which has been demonstrated in diverse cultural contexts, levels of care and age groups. It should be emphasised that the most effective interventions are those that incorporate a systematic evaluation of self-care deficits, structured educational programmes, gradual support systems and family participation, elements that should be considered essential in the design of programmes based on this theory.
