Amalgams vs. composites over the years [Amalgamas versus composites a través de los años]

Objective: to carry out a comparative study between amalgams versus composites through the years from a documentary review. Method: systematic population-based review of 15 scientific articles. Results and Conclusion: The choice between amalgams and composites in dentistry depends on a balance between durability, esthetics, biocompatibility, cost, placement technique, environmental impact and current preference. Amalgams stand out for their greater durability, lower cost and ease of placement, but their limited esthetics and environmental and health concerns related to mercury have reduced their use.
