Dental care protocol for children with Down syndrome [Protocolo de atención odontológica en niños con síndrome de Down]

Objective: To design a dental care protocol that improves oral health in children with Down syndrome. Method: Cross-sectional qualitative-quantitative descriptive study conducted on 166 students from seventh to tenth semester of Dentistry at the Regional Autonomous University of Los Andes. A structured survey was applied to evaluate knowledge about dental care in patients with Down syndrome. Results: 96.99% recognize that Down syndrome causes oral problems, 88.55% identify characteristic interdental spaces, and 98.19% consider specialized care necessary. However, 59.64% do not receive specific teaching on the subject and 72.89% are unaware of specialized protocols. Conclusions: The educational deficiency in specialized dental care for patients with Down syndrome generates application of inadequate general protocols, reducing patient cooperation during treatment.
