Objective: To determine the presence of oral microorganisms in patients with fixed orthodontic appliances, considering that adhesion and colonisation may be influenced by several factors. Materials and methods: Observational, cross-sectional study conducted in 67 patients. Samples were collected with Citoswab® swabs from three anatomical sites in the upper right quadrant. Results: Fifteen microorganisms were isolated, with Streptococcus mutans being the most frequent, followed by Candida albicans. No significant association was found with cement type, age or sex; however, statistically significant differences (p = 0.017) were obtained with treatment time, in which the count of Candida albicans increased in the treatment ranges of five to twelve months. Conclusions: A significant correlation was observed between orthodontic treatment time and increased microbial colonisation. This suggests that prolonged treatment favours the development of biofilms in the attachment-tooth interface.
