Abstract

Objective: To analyse the pathophysiological mechanisms, diagnostic criteria and therapeutic strategies of thyroid storm as an endocrinological emergency. Method: A systematic review was conducted in ELSEVIER, Embase, PubMed, Clinical Key, Scielo and Scopus during 2020-2025. The following descriptors were used: hyperthyroidism, thyrotoxicosis and thyroid storm. One hundred initial references were evaluated, including 24 studies. Results: The global prevalence is 0.2-0.76 cases per 100,000 inhabitants/year, being more frequent in women (ratio 3:1) between 40-70 years of age. The Burch-Wartofsky scale with a score above 45 demonstrates high diagnostic sensitivity. Mortality reaches 10-30% due to multiple organ failure, heart failure, and arrhythmias. Conclusions: Timely identification using clinical criteria and the Burch-Wartofsky scale, combined with aggressive treatment in intensive care units, improves prognosis and reduces mortality.
